Why We Use AI to Support Recruiters, Not Replace Them

By Instant Connections

Anyone who has applied for a job in recent years will know the peculiar feeling of sending a carefully written application into what seems like a void, never quite certain whether a person has read it or whether it has simply been sorted, scored and set aside by software. At Instant Connections, a business built on the belief that people connect with people, we decided that our own recruitment process should never leave anyone feeling that way.

That does not mean we have turned our backs on technology. We use artificial intelligence to help our recruitment team work more efficiently, and we are open about exactly where it helps and where it stops. The line we have drawn is a simple one: AI supports our people, but decisions about people are made by people.

What AI actually does for us

The honest answer is that most of what AI does in our recruitment process is the work nobody went into recruitment to do. It helps us process and organise applications, summarise information, manage workflows, arrange interviews, handle communications and highlight details that our recruitment team may wish to look at more closely. When those tasks run smoothly in the background, our recruiters spend less time buried in administration and far more time on the part of the job that genuinely matters, which is getting to know the people who would like to join us.

For applicants, the aim is quicker replies, easier scheduling and fewer of those long silences that make searching for work so tiring.

What AI will never do here

Every recruitment interview at Instant Connections is conducted by a person. We do not use AI avatars, automated interviewers or any system designed to stand in for a human conversation, because a conversation with a machine tells neither side very much about the other.

Every decision is made by a person too, which means AI does not decide whether someone progresses, whether they are turned down or whether they receive an offer, and no applicant is rejected without human involvement. Where a system provides information, a classification or a recommendation, our team has full authority to question it, disregard it or override it, and they are expected to use their own judgement rather than accept whatever the software happens to suggest.

Why we feel so strongly about this

Our entire business is built on face to face engagement. The people we recruit go on to represent well known brands in real conversations with real customers, and the qualities that make someone excellent at that work are precisely the qualities an algorithm finds hardest to recognise. Warmth, resilience, curiosity and the ability to read a room rarely appear neatly on a CV, yet they tend to become obvious within a few minutes of speaking to someone properly. It would make very little sense for a company that champions human interaction for its clients to remove human interaction from the way it chooses its own people.

There is also the matter of fairness. AI systems can make mistakes, and automated processing can introduce bias that nobody intended and nobody notices until it has already affected someone’s chances. We would rather acknowledge that openly and build human oversight into the process than pretend the technology is more reliable than it is. If anything produced by an AI tool looks inaccurate, incomplete or inappropriate, our recruiters can set it aside and assess the applicant directly, which is exactly what we want them to do.

Your right to ask for a human review

Transparency only means something if applicants are able to act on it. If you believe information about you has been processed incorrectly, misunderstood or misrepresented by one of our systems, you can raise this with our recruitment team and request a human review, and doing so will not by itself place you at any disadvantage.

Technology in its proper place

We will continue to review how AI is used in our recruitment process as the technology develops, because the tools will keep changing while our responsibility to applicants stays the same. The principles beneath it all remain constant: human interviews, human decisions, responsible use of technology, fair treatment of every applicant and clear accountability that rests with people rather than systems.

AI makes us quicker, better organised and better at keeping in touch, but it does not make us better judges of character and was never meant to. That part of recruitment belongs to our team, and it is where we look forward to meeting you.
